US Open Tennis Information
The US Open Tennis tournament is a group of five tournaments that had its initial beginning in 1881. The five tournaments are the men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles. It is the fourth and last event in the yearly series of Grand Slam tournaments in tennis. It always occurs during the last week of August and the first week of September (before and after Labor Day). It is currently played at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City, New York. The tournaments have been held there since 1978, however, it has only been named for Billie Jean King since 2006. The US Open is the only major tennis tournament where the final set is determined by tiebreakers. The other three continue to play the fifth set for men, and the third set for women until a player has won by two games. This year the tournament starts on August 25 and will end on September 7.
The US Open started as two separate sets of tennis tournaments. The men's tournaments started with a singles tournament in 1881 held at Newport, Rhode Island. The women's tournaments started in 1887 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Originally, only amateur players were allowed to play. The two sets of tournaments combined in 1968, with professional players being allowed for the first time – thus its name Open. The tournament started using a grass court, then moved to a Har-Tru clay court, and now is played on DecoTurf. Jimmy Connors is the only person to have won the US Open on all three courts. Total prize money and player compensation for 2007 was $19,653,000. The current champions are Roger Federer of Switzerland and Justine Henin of Belgium. However, Henin will not be back to defend her title, as she announced her retirement from professional tennis on May 14, 2008.
